And develop a platform for reviving the Indian-ness in our society and life. Over the last decades of democracy in India, principles of public life have largely been defined by the political class. This is unusual, especially for a nation where the society and cultural ethos has always defined the politics and political principles.

Unlike America, and like the Europe, China, and Asia, the social structure, thinking, and movements have defined the democratic ethos in India.

The British colonial history ended in India when the society identified itself as the political leadership of the country, and willed itself from the subaltern to the mainstream.

That moment of historical transformation had stretched itself over several decades after Indian Independence and helped in evolving the vibrant democracy India is today (Read More)

From Constituent Assembly debates

‘If things go wrong, we will have nobody to blame except ourselves’

Independence is no doubt a matter of joy. But let us not forget that this independence has thrown on us great responsibilities.

By independence,we have lost the excuse of blaming the British for anything going wrong.

If hereafter things go wrong, we will have nobody to blame except ourselves. There is great danger of things going wrong.

Times are fast changing. People including our own are being moved by new ideologies. They are getting tired of Government by the people.

They are prepared to have Governments for the people and are indifferent whether it is Government of the people and by the people. If we wish to preserve the Constitution in which we have sought to enshrine the principle of Government of the people, for the people and by the people, let us resolve not to be tardy in the recognition of the evils that lie across our path and which induce people to prefer Government for the people to Government by the people, nor to be weak in our initiative to remove them. That is the only way to serve the country. I know of no better.

on Constitution on November 25, 1949 (Source: Prasar Bharati

Nitty-Gritty of Constitution-making

For the new nation to come into its own, the first task was to put together a Constitution thatcombined the best of  Indian wisdom with International ideas of democracy, equality, liberty,
and justice. For this, a Constituent Assembly needed to come into form.

The Constituent Assembly was formed in 1946 under the Cabinet Mission Plan. Members to the Constituent Assembly were elected indirectly from the existing provincial assemblies through their single, transferrable votes. Dr Rajendra Prasad was chosen the President of the Assembly, while Dr Sachidananda Sinha was appointed temporary president being the senior-most member of the Assembly. HC Mookherjee and VT Krishnamachari were the two vice-presidents.

The Assembly initially had 389 members, but after India’s Partition and the formation of
Pakistan on August 14, 1947, several members left for the newly formed country – and now it
had 299 members. The idea to form a Constituent Assembly in India was first mooted in 1934 by
MN Roy.

The Assembly met for the first time on December 9, 1946. Work on the Constitution started on
December 9, 1946, and ended on December 26, 1949, after a period of 2 years 11 months and
18 days.

Indian in word, deed, values

Jana Gana Mana Adhinayak Jaya Hey…!!

A lump rises to every Indian’s throat when he listens to the initial strains of the National Anthem, or when the Indian Tricolour raises its proud head in any world arena. Proud Indians take to chanting, ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Jai Hind’, and ‘Vande Mataram’.

Then many of the same people go out and spit gutkha, staining the walls of public spaces, or litter indiscriminately.

A sea of plastic packets and wrappers welcome visitors, be it a scenic location or a beach – sometimes right under a sign saying, “Cleanliness is Godliness”.
Indian cities are now beset with the same issues across the board – air and water pollution, poor garbage disposal mechanism, littering, unruly traffic, abysmal public hygiene, harassment of women and irate, impatient people on a short fuse.

The consumerist approach to life adopted widely with everyone thinking what he stands to gain in a situation is a big reason. The ‘Hustle Culture’ has turned into the ‘Hassle Culture’ where our own needs are supreme over everyone else’s.

It’s never too late to do good

“Goodness is the language which the deaf can hear and the
blind can see”-Mark Twain

When was the last time you stepped out of your home and didn’t
dread the commute?
Did a fellow commuter knock you off balance as you tried to enter a
Metro rail coach, or a motorist overtook you from the wrong side,
without even blinking an indicator? Did you end up swearing at the
chaos unleashed at a traffic intersection by unruly motorists?

Despite all this, do you still go out of your way to drop a neighbour’s
kid to his exam centre, or find a good school for your fruit vendor’s
daughter?

You do your bit for the environment, feed the
neighbourhood strays, or leave a water bowl out for birds in the searing heat of an Indian summer?

Maybe take care of the old trees that have given shade for decades? Do you instinctively stop to help an accident victim without a second thought?

EVENT INFORMATION
📜 Did You Know?

Do you know that the date of India’s Republic Day was decided almost two decades before we attained Independence on August 15, 1947?

R-Day date in memory of 1930 demand for ‘Purna Swaraj’

The Constituent Assembly that was drafting the Constitution adopted it on November 26, 1949. We celebrate Constitution Day to commemorate the event. However, January 26, 1950 was chosen as they day it would come into force. India celebrates its Republic Day on January 26.

It was Pt Jawaharlal Nehru who proposed that the Indian Constitution come into effect on January 26, 1950 to commemorate the historic demand for ‘Purna Swaraj’, or complete independence from British rule, at the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress in December 1929. It was decided to celebrate the ‘Purna Swaraj’ call on the last Sunday of the
next month which was on January 26, 1930.

The participants in the Lahore Session voted for Dominion status (India would continue to be a colony with limited freedom) versus Purna Swaraj. Leaders like Motilal Nehru were proponents of Dominion status for India, while others like Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and Bal Gangadhar Tilak were in favour of complete independence. The latter motion won with overwhelming majority.

Our ancestors might have been on to something when they spoke about
avoiding emotional excess. Smoking, drinking, pollutants, and chemical
traces in food can make you very sick. Everyone knows that. We are aware
of radiation from gadgets and take care while using any for sustained
periods of time.
Not managing to blow your head might help in maintaining peace on the
work floor and keep things calm at home. However, it doesn’t exactly work
as well for your body. What about the poison in the form of negative and
suppressed emotions that we harbour in our bodies?

Constitution drafters you never heard of!

Babasaheb_Ambedkar

When it comes to setting up India’s democratic framework, two bureaucrats, and their colleagues, in the Constituent Assembly Secretariat (CAS) played a pivotal part in not just the writing of the Constitution, but also in preparing its first electoral roll with 173 million voters. Without this electoral roll being drawn from across the country, the dream of Universal Adult Franchise would have remained a pipedream. (Read More)

Why start from
school?

Everything we do today is an investment to ensure a better tomorrow.
Children are our best investment for a kinder, positive, more equitable
future. The age-old Indian values of respect, ethics, a sense of
responsibility, dignity, love and compassion can enrich any life.

Values instilled today will last a lifetime and be passed on to the next
generation. In the age of social media, reels and endless distraction, let’s
give our children cultural moorings that will let them find their inner strength
and help them tide over life’s thick and thin – not just for themselves, but
also those around them – immediate family, friends, colleagues, and their
wider community.
After all when you take care of yourself, and yours, India’s prospects start
getting brighter.

When women artists left their mark on history

The term ‘Nation Builders’ brings to mind our Founding Fathers who dreamt
of an independent Democratic Republic of India that holds its head high
among the nations of the world. We think of politicians, statesmen,
architects, engineers and scientists, but seldom do we think of artists.
However, artists play an important role in building national identity.
It was with this idea that Jawaharlal Nehru called upon Nandalal Bose, one
of the greats of Indian art, who was then the principal of Shantiniketan’s
premier art school, Kala Bhavan, to decorate the Constitution in gold-leaf
drawing. Bose and his team from Shantiniketan dedicated themselves to
the task of presenting the civilisational turn of India’s culture – from
Mohenjodaro to present day. (Read More)
